Future Indigenous Waiata
"I’m inspired by the inner workings of the mind, the heart, the manawa (spirit) and the way we connect back through our ancestors, and into the future through our children and the lives of people we connect with. Language can be medicine”.
Huia’s music flows from ambient tunes, liquid Dnb, through to dancehall bangers, and she has a vibrant and friendly stage presence. She also loves to do small, intimate gatherings, keeping it simple with a guitar and her voice.
Her performances are a coming together of new friends. She weaves a connected experience, where the audience and her performance are one, and the music flows between them, no matter what the language, genre or country.
Huia knows that her music is breaking the silence… not her silence, but by the act of singing in te reo Māori (Māori language), she is breaking her ancestors' silence of a language that was stopped through the violence of colonisation.
More than ‘just a language’, singing in Māori is a way to heal her family line's trauma and ensure it's strong for the future. As a māmā and a quiet community leader, Huia’s music amplifies her values and her culture, and she brings this to the stage, as well as an uplifting, fun experience with a Māori wahine (woman).
